Passengers arriving at Newcastle International Airport are now being welcomed with striking images of iconic regional landmarks.
Stunning photographs featuring well-known North East sights, including Durham Cathedral, mima, Hadrian’s Wall and the Angel of the North are now adorning walls throughout the airport. The pictures also include portraits of people featured in the campaign including musician Kathryn Tickell and kitesurfer Colin Baldwin.
An estimated 5.4 million people come through Newcastle International Airport every year and the images will be seen by both international and domestic passengers.
David Laws, Newcastle International Airport’s acting chief executive, said: “The new North East England imagery has completely transformed one of the most important areas of the airport. It gives passengers a dramatic and truly inspiring welcome to the region, as well as offering them a taste of some of the landmark sights they’ll no doubt see during their stay”.
This passionate welcome to North East England comes in time for the launch of the daily, non-stop Emirates Airlines route from Newcastle to Dubai on September 1 2007. It will be the first ever scheduled long-haul flight to operate from the region giving easier access to some of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
9 October is the date of the prestigious World Travel Awards (Europe). This gala evening, held at The Sage Gateshead, will see over 300 members of the global travel industry gather to celebrate excellence in the travel industry. Several of the region’s hotels are in the running for awards, including The Copthorne Hotel, Langley Castle, Matfen Hall, Lumley Castle, Slaley Hall and Seaham Hall.

The Regional Image team has recently produced a new Campaign Brochure. Organisations across the region are continuing to show their pride and passion for our part of the world by displaying the North East England and ‘passionate about’ logos in a variety of interesting and innovative ways. Thanks to all of our campaign supporters for their valuable support. Here are some of the latest examples of how people are showing they’re passionate about North East England…
New Internet search facility Locallife Newcastle are showing their support for the region by using ‘Passionate about local life’ set against a stunning image of the NewcastleGateshead Quayside. Committed to adding value to the local community, all voluntary organisations and charity groups are advertised for free on the Locallife directory which can be found at www.locallife.co.uk/newcastle.
Sunderland-based communications specialists Cellular Solutions showed they are ‘Passionate about sport’ by using North East England banners at their annual golf day. More than 90 players took part in the event at Gosforth Golf Club, which is run every year in aid of the Chronicle Sunshine Fun. For more information please visit www.cellular-solutions.co.uk.
Purdy Lodge are ‘Passionate about places to stay’ and are doing their bit to raise the profile of the region by using the branding at the foot of every page on their new website. To find out more go to www.purdylodge.co.uk
Business training and development company Peak are now using the “Passionate about coaching” and North East England logos on their website, e-mails as well as on all stationery. Peak host training courses around the country and are spreading the word about North East England wherever they go! To find out more visit their website at www.mattsomers.com.
Walworth Castle, County Durham, has become the first Castle to fly the North East England flag. The 12th Century Castle is now proudly flying a “Passionate about castles” flag from one of its main towers. The 34-bedroom hotel will now also be using the branding on a newly launched website as well as on its stationery. For more information go to www.walworthcastle.co.uk.
The Regional Image campaign is also delighted to be working with the Newcastle Schools Sport Partnership, with a number of schools showing they are ‘Passionate about sport’ by displaying eye-catching hoardings around their sporting facilities.
Stockton Sixth Form College are the latest campaign supporters to make use of free campaign posters supplied by the Regional Image team. Following in the footsteps of Job Centre Plus, The Passport Office and Ideal Caravans, the passionate people and places featured in the campaign’s print adverts will be brightening up the college’s classrooms, helping to instil regional pride and passion in generations to come!

The ‘Passionate people. Passionate places’ campaign continues to spread the word about the region through branding at regional events.
Everyone visiting last weekend’s Sunderland Air Show were treated to a spectacular aerial display including the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team dropping in to show their support for the campaign. The team unveiled a giant North East England flag as they made their landing against the stunning backdrop of the Sunderland coastline.
Alongside sporting greats past and present, businesses from around the region showed they were ‘Passionate about sport’ at COCO’s Celebrity Golf Day at De Vere Slaley Hall. Over £20,000 was raised for the charity, which aims to help the lives of children affected by poverty, famine, war, illness and disease.

The Regional Image team also teamed-up with the Association of North East Councils to represent the region at the LGA Conference in Birmingham, spreading the word about the passionate people and places of North East England. Visitors to the exhibition stand were given a taste of some of our finest local produce, with Ginger Beer from Fentimans, Northumberland Cows Cheese and Jenkins & Hustwit fruit cake, leaving a lasting impression!
Supporters of the campaign also continue to promote the region at their own events, by making use ‘Passionate’ banners. The organisers of Chopwell Forest Festival, Hartford Hall Garden Fete, Langley Castle Open Day and the North East Chamber of Commerce’s Skill Up Tees Valley have all been showing their support for the campaign by using the banners to bring a bit of passion to their events!
Whether you’re ‘Passionate about business’ or ‘Passionate about sport’, the Regional Image team has a selection of North East England indoor and outdoor banners that you can use free of charge. Judging is underway for the North East England Tourism Awards 2007 and will continue throughout the summer. The judges will visit tourism businesses across the region before drawing up a final shortlist in August ahead of the awards ceremony at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland in September.
Winners from last years event included Alnwick Castle and Once Brewed Tourist Information Centre who both went on to win gold awards at the national Enjoy England awards for excellence.
The ‘Passionate people. Passionate places’ campaign was recently named the nation’s Best Integrated PR Campaign by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) at the 2007 President's Grand Prix.

The North East England website is getting a new look making it easier to navigate and access regional and campaign information.
The website will also continue to focus on the valuable work of our campaign supporters and how they’re helping to promote the region, as well as featuring more about all there is to see and do around the North East.
From September, the site will include a more comprehensive Image Gallery and e-postcard facility run in conjunction with Art Evolution and photographers from across the region to showcase North East England’s breathtaking beauty. Many thanks to all photographers who have already donated images.
